Streetwise FW1
That’s our Streetwise Open FW1 done and dusted for the new 2023/24 year. With a solid forecast on the east coast that’s where the majority of the keener fisherman went.
Standouts were George and Kane who ventured up the Far north for a bin each of solid snapper some kahawai and the odd Pin trevally each. The majority of the club tried their luck a bit closer to home around the East cape and Bop area . Most reports were that fishing was slow but for those that put in the time , they did manage to tick away and secure a good feed of snapper and gurnard.
Pick of this bunch were James B and Justin who both got an impressive mixed bag of gurnards, kahawai and snapper.
Ahmed also managed a beauty of an elephant fish that went back for another day .
For those that braved it locally fishing was tough with the usual September Hawkes Bay suspects. 7 gillers, barrracouta , spineys and the odd kahawai. This will only improve as El Nino is well and truly starting to kick in.
Heaviest Snapper : George Fotu 5kg on the dot
Heaviest Gurnard : James Benge .95 kg
Best Other : Kane Wrigglesworth Trevally 2.45kg
Average Kahawai : Gary Kemsley 1.49 kg
3 pin fished were weighed in all Far North trevally : George F 1.76kg , Kane W 1.64kg & 2.45kg
Jackpot Gurnard fish lives to fight another day – This will be a $100 for FW 2 ( James B going very close but 5grams shy)
Special mention to James Benge who teamed up with new member Justin for the weekend so he had an idea of where to go. Great stuff and both were rewarded with a solid feed.
A reminder that each weigh in is now at the Taradale Club The weigh in time will change to 12pm for the next FW. Give yourself a bit of time , if you are late your fish will not be weighed in. Great excuse to come a bit early have a beer and tell some fibs on why you did or didn’t catch fish.
A couple of fish for the first time were measured and videoed for points. Note that its need to be a video, clear enough to see the measurement and shown/sent to the weighmaster at or before weigh in . This will be a work in progress but a fantastic start.
FW 2 is a 5am Saturday start 7th October , local normal boundaries apply , with weigh in 12pm Sunday 8th October at the Taradale Club . It is a carrot challenge (double points for Gurnard) More info closer to the time but by then, weather permitting locally should be throwing out some good fish. A weekend to circle for those looking to gain back some points or increase their good starts. Or just a good weekend to relax and hunt out a local fish as a bonus.
Attached is the breakdown of people’s fish and the points table after FW 1 – Has that feel once again that all categories are well and truly up for grabs . Looking forward to seeing these competitions unfold as the year goes on.
Thanks to Nikki our weighmaster for finalising the points and sorting out weigh in , new venue seems a win.
Goodluck for those venturing out fishing in between , otherwise see you FW 2
Cheers Karim Brown Club Captain
